Winter Park was strategically built in the 1860s around the railroad which served commerce and travel in order to establish a vacation town for wealthy white visitors. Hannibal Square, or the “west side,” was officially founded twenty years later, providing a source of African-American labor to build and serve the vacation destination. While deeply segregated for years, railroad jobs and domestic service positions led to higher levels of education, business and home ownership, and relative prosperity for black residents. Dr. Julian C. Chambliss and Fairolyn Livingston explore the ways in which members of the community have fought to preserve the heritage of this important piece of Central Florida history.

Mohl, Distinguished Professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Mohl spoke about the life and legacy of Stetson Kennedy who passed away on August 27, 2011 at the age of 94.

In May of 1981 the Winter Park Sinkhole opened up in a heavily urban area of the Metro Orlando area and the scene quickly became the sire of an ongoing recovery effort by both the City of Winter Park and private business owners. Ronald Moore, the Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation for the city describes the recovery efforts. Business owners were asked to contrast theirs and others’ efforts with those of the city. One of the central issues that rises out of this program is the absence of laws that required property insurance to protect against sinkhole damage. Moore continues with a description of the site today and the current operations of Lake Island Park. He also describes current monitoring efforts.

Episode 7: The Winter Park Sinkhole Part 1: Eyewitness Reactions to a Disaster

In early May of 1981 Mae Rose Owens was walking her dog when to her surprise a tree in her yard suddenly disappeared. She quickly called Winter Park emergency services to report the incident. Within the span of three days a 350 foot hole opened up in the ground, swallowing several properties and causing millions of dollars in damage while an international media spectacle descended upon the town. Public reaction was one of curiosity instead of fright, and onlookers traveled by the droves to watch the slowly developing sinkhole. Most people were fairly unaware of what a sinkhole was and found themselves gaining an education. Profiteers set up shop at the location as a carnival-like atmosphere developed. At the same time, many found that the sinkhole only reinforced a period of anxiety that was currently running through the country.

Each June, thousands of visitors flock to attend this annual phenomenon, which now boasts a number of themed parties dispersed throughout the span of an entire week. In this podcast, we explore the event’s history by speaking with Gay Days Incorporated President Chris Alexander-Manley. Chris has been involved with Gay Days since its inception, and for that reason his account sheds light on the event’s origins and also the ways in which it has evolved. We also speak with Jack Rutland, Executive Director of the Stonewall Library Museum Archive, whose professional role centers around gay history. His insights are useful in positioning Gay Days within a larger historical narrative. Now the headquarters of the Florida Historical Society, the former post office served the community for twenty-five years and received funding through New Deal legislation in the late 1930’s. Dr. Lester speaks about the goals of the New Deal and the impact of New Deal construction on places like Cocoa. Dr. Bliss discusses how post offices were chosen and how the architectural designs of New Deal construction reflected a change in American society. This month’s episode I interviewed Steven Reich a historian at James Madison University. Both Professor Reich and I have researched and are interested in the Great Migration, the migration of hundreds of thousands of African Americans from the rural South to urban parts of the country during the first half of the 20^th century. In the interview we consider the ways in which this migration of people have captured the imagination of reformers, writers and historians so much that as we communicate what this migration means we transmit its myths along with its history. Professor Reich mentions Richard Wright, William Attaway and Ann Petry in the interview.

Welcome to the UCF Department of History Public History Podcast. On this month’s episode I interviewed Kate Moore who is a curatorial fellow at the Brownville Historical Association in Brownsville Texas. For the next month they will feature an exhibit on the Gibson Girls. These were illustrations by Charles Dana Gibson that appeared in advertising in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These drawing depicted the changing nature of the roles of women during that time and became very popular throughout that period.

I talked to Ms. Moore about the exhibit and what visitors could take away from it.

On this podcast we interviewed Dr. Vladimir Solonari who is an associate professor of history here at the University of Central Florida. In this podcast we discussed the Russian Textbook controversy and what that means within the context of remembering the communist past in Eastern Europe. Kritika: Explorations in Russian and Eurasian History featured a round table discussion with Dr. Solonari as one of the invited authors to discuss the publication of Istoriia Rossii, 1945-2008 gg: Kniga dlia uchitelia [trans. A History of Russia, 1945-2008: A Teacher's Handbook] a Russian state sponsored book of Russian history for classroom use.

It feels really great to feature a non-US topic on this month's podcast. We hope to produce more.

Documenting Puerto Ricans in Central Florida

On this podcast we interviewed , Dr. Patricia Silver, an anthropologist studying the migration of Puerto Ricans to Central Florida.

She is directing a project titled “Puerto Ricans in Central Florida 1940s to 1980s: A History.” which focuses on Puerto Ricans who came to Central Florida before and during the 1980s, when the first wave of Puerto Ricans migrated to Orlando and nearby cities. The University of Central Florida was a partner on this project.

This was an exhibit on display throughout Central Florida, at the Winter Park Public Library, the Hart Memorial Center Library in Osceola County, and the Orange County Public Library.

Private Funding and The Museum of Sex

This month’s episode features an interview with Jessica Vaccaro. She is the Director of Communications and Library Services at the Museum of Sex.

I first heard about the Museum of Sex through a story on NPR. You can listen to the original NPR story here.

One thing I found interesting was that this museum decided not to incorporate as a non-profit because it realized that it would be difficult to pursue public funding through government agencies due to what could be perceived as the controversial nature of the content.
This podcast is about what the museum is as an academic idea and their funding structure and how that funding structure is working for them in these depressed academic times.

Does a museum have to be a structure of wood, brick or concrete? Can it be the natural environment? On this month’s podcast we talk with Professor Jack E. Davis at the University of Florida about his recent book An Everglades Providence: Marjory Stoneman Douglas and the American Environmental Century. When reading his book I thought a lot of the work Douglas did really reflected the purpose and ethos of Public History. I do not think it would be a stretch to say Douglas was also the curator of the Everglades. Think of this, if you have her book Everglades River of Grass handy while traveling through the Everglades then maybe you are also a patron in an ecological exhibit. The Underground Tour is a historic tour of Seattle’s underground ruins from the late 19th century. When meeting him in Seattle, I found his approach to historical tourism to be unorthodox, critical and completely engaging. I decided to interview him to learn the reasons for his approach to history and the reaction to his post-modern style. This month's podcast is a documentary on an exhibit produced by the UCF History Department and the Winter Park Historical Association. The exhibit was "From Kin to Kant: The Culture of Turpentine."

As opposed to show the information from the exhibit we decided to produce a documentary about some of the elements that went into creating the exhibit. We recorded interviews with Bob Putnam who was the inspiration for the entire exhibit. Additionally we spoke with Marianne Popkins and Kathy Parry who along with Professor Robert Cassanello created the exhibit. We also interviewed Professor Steven Reich from James Madison University who came to the exhibit in the Spring of 2009 to give a talk about turpentine workers and Professor Tiffany Patterson from Vanderbilt University whose book Zora Neale Hurston and a History of Southern Life we read as guide to understand Zora Neale Hurston and the lives and culture of the turpentine workers.

In this podcast we discuss orienting clubs, herty cups, Zora Neale Hurston, Turpentine, dioramas, and Jook Joints. There is something for everybody here.

Oral History and Jim Crow

On this Podcast we talk with Professor Paul Ortiz director of the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program at the University of Florida. We spoke with him about his experience conducting oral histories. As a graduate student at Duke University he worked with the Behind the Veil Project which recorded the oral histories of Southerners who experienced Jim Crow Segregation. He collaborated on the radio program and book Remembering Jim Crow with other people involved in the program as well as using some of those oral histories in his own book Emancipation Betrayed about black organizing and protest in Jim Crow Florida.

In the Podcast we spoke about the book The Southern Past by W. Fitzhugh Brundage, in case anyone wants to examine that work further.

Greetings all, this podcast is the first in our regular series Public History Podcast.

In this podcast we interviewed Professor Jim Norris an associate professor of history at North Dakota State University. He is the author of North for the Harvest: Mexican Workers, Growers, and the Sugar Beet Industry.

We interviewed Professor Norris about his history of sugar beet workers, the global history of sugar and the challenges he faced throughout his research.
